London Without Fog

Warmer than So-Cal? Yes. At least while I was there.
5576dsc08143.JPG
So Deanna and I are walking around central London enjoying our day and we walk into Leicester Square to find some sort of event going on. I quickly discover it is a film premiere for "State of Play" and walk up to see what all the people are looking at. Well it turns out they are looking at...
5576dsc08141.JPG
Russel Crowe, who is the star of the film. He is being a nice guy and signing tons of autographs.
5576dsc08145.JPG
I take a photo too. Who knows why. I wouldn't call myself a fan of any certain actor, but there is that strangeness of seeing someone live you have seen so many times in films. I've seen Romper Stomper, but that does not make me need a photo of this guy. So here it is, a photo that fits perfectly here in this waste of time that is my blog.
5576dsc08146.JPG
Warning sign for the movie "the Reader" You have to be at least 15 to see strong sex.
5576dsc08150.JPG
Food from Mildred's in London. Some sort of Mushroom pastry. Pretty good.
5576dsc08151.JPG
And Deanna got some "sausage" and mash type of dish.
5576dsc08155.JPG
Sitting ducks.
5576dsc08167.JPG
One of our vegan dessert highlights. A crepe filled with ice-cream and smothered in vanilla cream and chocolate sauce. It's not right in central London, but it is worth a visit for you vegans, 222 Veggie Vegan Restaurant.
5576dsc08179.JPG
Oh yes, the vegan milkshakes from Eat And Two Veg. They'll put a little Kahlua in it if you want.
5576dsc08187.JPG
Over 90 rolls of film when all was said and done, lets see what comes back...

The church is not notorious for being behind the gay community, so this is pretty cool.

Last days of Barcy...

5537dsc07902.JPG
This is what an epic spot looks like when its raining, and you are just looking at it wishing you could shred it.

This is for Grant's GF Ashley, I was trying to shoot his schlong for her, but it was well hidden. Oh well.

I have no explanation for this one.

When it is raining and your are in an amazing skate place, your brain just degenerates into the basest of potty-humor, as you can tell by this post so far...

The rain in Spain falls mostly in Barcelona

Apparently...

It's been raining on our parade here in Barcelona, so we do what we can to pass the time.

Time-Lag through Germany/France/Spain

5509dsc07755.JPG
So we left Dusseldorf many days ago where Deanna had a successful show opening.
>>>>> See the NRW-Forum Flickr Stream... <<<<<
5509dsc07770.JPG
We went to Paris for a short pit-stop, then we took a train ride to Barcelona.
5509dsc07777.JPG
We had to stop in Montpellier to change trains. We had an hour to spare so we lugged our bags up to the main square to check it out. We switched from a very nice clean French train to a crusty, "never been touched since 1960" train with broken seats that flipped back while I sat in it hurting a little girl behind me and making the trip awesome.
5509dsc07779.JPG
That train.
5509dsc07782.JPG
Ahhh, Barcelona. Plenty of taxis waiting, but rain on the horizon.
(notice they completely took out that spot that used to be right there, the one with the steps...)
5509dsc07783.JPG
We did a little health food shopping and noticed some not so PC race/color/flavor combinations. I imagine the meeting. "yeah, obviously, put the black guy on the Chocolate cereal, get it?"
5509dsc07785.JPG
Deanna shakes her fist at the companies who don't make their tasty looking products vegan
5509dsc07794.JPG
Then Kevin...
5509dsc07796.JPG
...and Grant flew in from LA for some skating action. Grant flew himself over to shred with me and Diego, it's his first time to Europe! Yeah Grant!

Deanna nails it. Next stop, Barcelona.

Trying to film for the Emerica video...
5500dsc07688.JPG
Today is the big day for Deanna, her opening! She had to get the the Museum for a press conference...
5500dsc07690.JPG
There was "material" for the press about her work being handed out by young beautiful women, pretty cool.
5500dsc07691.JPG
I went downstairs while she was talking to the press and watched a group of 13 to 15 year old kids get a tour of the Michel Comte show. "Ok children, this is the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni... Oh, and she's completely naked."
The clear path to first-ladydom laid out for the children.
5500dsc07694.JPG
Then I went back up to see how she was doing... "Work it baby!"
5500dsc07704.JPG
Then she had to field questions from the press.
5500dsc07705.JPG
The press.
5500dsc07713.JPG
Just before the opening we shot a photo of ourselves to remember the excitement.
I had to speak in front of 200 people and present Deanna's work. I was pretty nervous too.
5500dsc07714.JPG
The opening was filled with people. I sorta blew it on shooting photos when it was really packed and only got photos after the fact, but it was still heavily populated into the evening...
5500dsc07715.JPG
Who is this?: Ralph Mittendorf, German vert skater from the late 80's early 90's.
He used to have long curly hair I am pretty sure.
He was there. I looked really hard on the inter-web for photos of him from back in the day, but couldn't find any.
(Skaters from that era: Send Photos!)
5500dsc07717.JPG
Deanna's subject matter inspired copy-cats. This one is on a young man, but there were some older women and some teenage girls in the mix too.
5500dsc07719.JPG
Young Noah from the Netherlands.
5500dsc07723.JPG
A young man approached me and lifted his pant-leg to reveal no less than 3 tattoos of Toy Machine related artwork.
Then asked me to draw on his leg with my worn out sharpie, so he could tattoo over it the next day.
This always stresses me out because this will be with the person for life - and it all rests on what I do right there. If I make a sub-standard drawing, then they have a sub standard tattoo I guess. I always advise against it, but I can't stop them, it's their body.
5500danielrosin.JPG
No, it's not Lance Conklin. His name is Daniel Rosin. (I hope I got the last name right.)
I'm honored he loves Toy Machine and my artwork so much.
5500dsc07730.JPG
Later in the night, Deanna had to give an interview. I sat in on it.
5500dsc07727.JPG
"Man, we need to go eat..."
5500dsc07733.JPG
The Huijts Family came all the way from Holland-!!!!
(OK, only an hour by car, but the whole family!!!)
Thanks!
5500dsc07735.JPG
Just before leaving forever, Deanna wanted to take a last minute walk-through so she could remember her show.
You don't really get to digest anything at the opening.
5500dsc07751.JPG
Posters for sale from her show.

Deanna Templeton takes over Dusseldorf...

With only one functioning arm.
5492dsc07569.JPG
We walk over to the NRW-Forum and are greeted with a huge Deanna banner hanging over the doorway. As you saw in the last post, there are posters all over town in circular stands and billboards. It is impossible to walk through town without seeing Deanna's work.
5492dsc07574.JPG
Times have changed. Deanna made me put on the white gloves! Her artwork has now climbed to the "White Glove Treatment" level. You know you are big-time when...
5492dsc07577.JPG
A team of professional art hangers got busy putting up work faster than Deanna could figure out where she wanted it.
5492dsc07587.JPG
Deanna and Werner, the Director of the NRW-Forum discuss the finer points of a body autograph.
Ever heard of the magazine Stern? It's pretty big in Germany - like David Hasselhof big. They featured Deanna on their website.
5492dsc07592.JPG
Deanna with some of her recently hung photographs.
Did you know your can buy her self-published book (with sponsorship from RVCA and Emerica) called "17-Days" at the RVCA Store?
5492dsc07597.JPG
Deanna asked for the room to be painted blue, and within 4 hours it was painted and the team was busy hanging and expertly lighting each photo. Museums don't mess around.
5492dsc07602.JPG
The next day started at 11 AM and ended at 7 PM with Deanna doing non-stop interviews for newspapers, magazines, and TV cameras. She was a trooper.
5492dsc07605.JPG
Oh yeah, - it's art.
5492dsc07613.JPG
Deanna in front of one of her many interview backdrops.

5492dsc07628.JPG
The sign when you walk up the steps to her floor...
5492dsc07631.JPG
These TV people set up a dolly shot so Deanna could walk in front of her artwork. They had very specific ideas. I had to sign the woman's arm for the camera so they could get a signing shot.
5492dsc07638.JPG
"Walk baby walk! Yeah! More Surreal!!!!"
5492dsc07641.JPG
The lighting was really nice. It makes you focus on just the photographs.
5492dsc07667.JPG
On the street in Dusseldorf...
5492dsc07674.JPG
Deanna's lowly documentarian. (I have a show up too! And a new one coming in Berlin!)

It's a wonderful life (except breaking your arm.)
