Ed's Collection of Coastal Critters

A menagerie of pacific shore animal life, AKA: Birthday in Catalina ----- And a special thanks to all the well-wishers who commented, I really appreciate that.
5896baldeaglephalus8amk.jpg
So the beginning of this post is the collection of Coastal Critters we encountered first hand using photos stolen from the interweb. (Since I didn't have an underwater camera with me, or a zoom lens, or in some cases didn't care to get a photo. And also because I was shooting mostly film and will have to wait for the film to be developed to see my shots.)
OK, ready to begin. We saw one of the rare Bald Eagles living here in southern California.
5896baldeaglefish.jpg
And watched him swoop down and catch a fish. So accurate an efficient.
We also saw some of the usual suspects while nature looking in Catalina such as the ever present Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, and Brandt's Cormorant.
5896leopardshark.jpg
The highlight of our snorkelling adventures was the adundance of Leopard Sharks living close to the shore in beaches very close to Avalon. I think Logan Kincade got some footage, so look for that in an upcoming episode.
5896leopardshark0083.jpg
We would pull the boat close to shore and see up to 20 at a time from our standing vantage point, their bodies clearly seen in the sunlight shallows, but when you get into the water the are very elusive. On this trip finally I was able to snorkel underwater with them, albeit shortly.
5896shovelnoseguitarfish.JPG
One of my favorite sightings was the Shovelnose Guitarfish. What a weird looking ray! We were observing a bat ray when the guitarfish swam up next to the bat ray and rested next to him. We floated atop these two for a good 3 minutes before Deanna started to freak out, thinking that it might attack us.
5896batray.jpg
The Bat Ray's are great to see. I swam down and touched one thinking that they did not have a stinger, but after reading up on them, I realized perhaps I should not do that.
5896batrayn.jpg
At one point there were 4 of them hanging out together.
5896stingray4725781d1.jpg
And of course the Stingrays were in abundance and one was wise to watch his step in the sandy parts of the shallows. Luckily the ones we see in Catalina are small, and not the big ones that killed Steve Irwin, and certainly not the REALLY GIANT ones.

Now to the photos we shot:
5896dsc08767.JPG
These are the dudes that came over, Kevin, Grant, Austin, and Grif-dog.
5896dsc08772.JPG
A very enjoyable time was had by all -- jumping off the Frog Rock, and snorkelling with the sharks and rays.
5896dsc08769.JPG
Relaxing on the chill tube. I could have said "Chillaxing" but that would be the ultimate douche thing to say.
5896dsc08776.JPG
Then the dudes left...
5896dsc08777.JPG
Leaving me and Deanna to spend the night there and be alone for a day of Catalina to ourselves. The day after turned out to be EPIC.
5896dsc08812.JPG
Deanna and I had our first ever up close experience with Dolphins! Hundreds of them!
5896dsc08779.JPG
They would cruise next to our boat and turn sideways to check us out. We could hear them communitacting in whistles and whines. I hope they weren't saying "get the fuck away from us asshole." It was breathtaking.
5896dsc08814.JPG
We were mainly shooting real film, so these digi-cam shots were sort of an afterthought, but we did shoot a little video that will most likely appear in an upcoming Logan Kincade segment, which will certainly be linked here when it comes out.
5896dsc08791.JPG
You can see a sweet jump here, and the Casino building in Avalon in the background. What a mega day!

I was away in Catalina, but I'm back...

And not for long.
5876dsc08722.JPG
This is Deanna and me, with Deanna's brother Joe, his wife Kerrie, and our niece, Sophia at the Wrigley Memorial, a few miles east of Avalon. W.M. Wrigley is not even buried there.

This is an Acorn Woodpecker peeking at me from his nest in a palm tree. We saw a plethora of wildlife while there including Leopard shark, bat rays, stingrays, shovelnose guitarfish, and bald eagles.

4th of July in HB

Some photos for you while I will be away from any computers for the next 4 days.

Look for some new posts next Thursday...
586033690017.JPG
People were out in the sun enjoying fair-style food. Kids were on sugar highs from free Coca-Cola being handed out. "Please take our drug and get hooked-! Your kids will love it-! Take part in their early diabetes-!"
586033690020.JPG
You can see me lurking in the reflection...
586033690021.JPG
This was not a free sample. I heard this conversation between this girl and her mother after they bought her some jelly style candies: Mom: "OK, that's it for us, no more sweets..." Child: "Yeah, until YOU want some more."
586034020019.JPG
Burger, fries, and a free coke, don't bother me, I'll be dead at 40.
586034020024.JPG
Yeah America!
586033660002.JPG
So much to see and do before we die.

Then over at the OC fair...

Grant and his family business at the OC fair.

Grif doing the Bones Brigade Ripper...

Hanging out at the Maloof and OC fair was awesome.

Something to digest.

The London I saw...

While walking, looking, and moving on.
58563475londonboywithswo.JPG
I shot this kid near a bus bench, and then was trying to buy a ticket for said bus when Deanna noticed a group of angry people looking at me and pointing. We were not in the most friendly of areas in London, far from the central London modern shopping mall of tourists, we were in northeast London, and the angry men were of middle eastern descent. I quickly crossed the street and entered a store for a respite from some possible confrontation.

Here is London, giddy London

Plagarism of poor Morrissey is so rampant, no? The price to pay for creating the soundtrack of peoples' lives.
58463474guardjoinerlondo.jpg
I wonder what it would take to get stabbed by this guy? Extry, Extry! Read all about it! The beheading of a young boy by a palace guard... This guy looked a lot more Eastern European, Russian than English to me.
58463472londoncameracar.JPG
London is seething with Orwellian roaming cameras filming everything. You may not be being watched, but you are being recorded for posterity and possible prosecution should you cross the lines from legal to illegal. I most cases what is the difference besides money?
58463472londongirlwithci.JPG
And on top of the coverage you have me, also roaming the streets and recording images, although not indiscriminately like a video camera, but selectively, looking and moving, making a quilt of both personal experience and social observation of a specific time and place. No prosecutions.
