News From August 2010

The old mixed with the sorta new.

Some photos from Laguna and Huntington Beach taken this year, and some old photos from a skate trip I was on in 2002.

Santa Catalina Island - Report

Doing some different things this trip.
7112img3841.JPG
Went to Santa Catalina Island with DD, her brother, his wife, and our niece Sophia. A little family trip.
7112img3834.JPG
Went out for a late day boat ride, and saw a pod of about 10 Bottlenose Dolphins but did not get any photos (!?) of the encounter. Sometimes you just observe and enjoy without getting proof. After, we cruised around these California Sea Lions who were sunning themselves on a bouy near the quarry.
7112img3838.JPG
These guys smell really foul when you get downwind of them.
7112img3839.JPG
Like I have probably said a million times before, the nights are magical here.
7112img3842.JPG

"We did not look at the underage market even though I am holding a document in my hand that says we did." –James Morgan, Former president & CEO of Philip Morris

"If children don't like to be in a smoky room, they'll leave." –Charles Harper, R.J. Reynolds Chairman
When asked by a shareholder about infants, who can't leave a smoky room, Harper stated, "At some point, they begin to crawl."

7112img3846.JPG
There was a nice whisp of pink fluff in the periwinkle blue skies.
7112img3857.JPG
And the Pleasure Pier was dancing under a nearly full moon.
7112img3862.JPG
Our two Bald Eagles, sitting together. This is the closest I have seen them.
7112img3865.JPG
This little guy was relaxing on someones boat at White's Landing. He had a fishing hook embedded in his flipper. So alternative. But seriously, fuck fishing.
7112img3874.JPG
Sophia brought up this guy. I spent longer that I reasonalby should have trying to find out what it was, but I couldn't.
7112img3885.JPG
On the way up to the Botanical Gardens, we see some young Mule Deer.
7112img3886.JPG
Always cute and alert.
7112img3897.JPG
From the Wrigley Memorial. It was supposed to be his (William Wrigley Jr.'s) mausoleum, but he didn't end up getting buried there.
7112img3913.JPG
Oh the old days...
7112img3949.JPG
Inside the glorious Casino Theater.
7112img3958.JPG
There's a fake Botticelli in there.
7112img3962.JPG
Avocado Sushi.
7112img3966.JPG
We took a hike up to the summit behind Avalon to see the other side of the island.
7112img3968.JPG
The views were quite nice.
7112img3976.JPG
You can march all along the divide, straddling both sides of the island.
7112img3981.JPG
The coulds were rising up from the Pacific below the mountains on a tuft of wind, and being pushed over the mountain, spilling like  a bowl of soup into Avalon Valley below.
7112img3985.JPG
At the top, we had to "one-up" the past hikers by making our own rock tower just a bit higher than theirs.
7112img3989.JPG
Suck that other hikers.
7112img3993.JPG
The swirly road we walked up was pretty much a wuss hike, but the view was great.
7112img4006.JPG
Dead rat on the way back down the mountain.

Raging Waters in San Dimas

It was Austin Stephen's birthday, and we all went to celebrate in the waterslides of the IE.
7096img3731.JPG
Drove with A-Stone up to the inland desert.
7096img3733.JPG
My last shower was the Pacific Ocean in Catalina, and my next one would be the chlorinated piss-water of Raging Waters.
7096img3734.JPG
Look at these guys. Lotioned up and ready for some Dropout action. I hope we all don't get double-pink-eye.
7096img3738.JPG
Lunch break. Grant predicted we would see some boob today, and he was right. But I missed it. They said it was pretty hefty and not very apealing, so maybe I'm glad I missed it?
7096img3739.JPG
I paid $8.50 for a "smoothie."
7096img3740.JPG
Be sure to re-apply that sunblock. The lines are out in the sun.
7096img3743.JPG
There are plenty of funny / scary / gangstery / etc. tattoos to look at there.
7096img3744.JPG
It's a crazy sea of humanity, markedly different than Huntington Beach.
7096img3750.JPG
Carl and Grif.
7096img3753.JPG
These days are the days, as always.
7096img3754.JPG
Austin was surprised he was still alive after all this time. Happy Birthday Austin!

Group photo. Austin's brother Cameron, Carl, Griffin, Grant, Rob, A-Stone, Your Truly.
7096img3763.JPG
There was no way we were waiting in that shuttle line.
7096img3764.JPG
We decided to hike it to the car.
7096img3775.JPG
It was a long walk, but nice, and there was a drunk girl in a bikini in front of us.
7096img3776.JPG
The sun was about hide behind the foothills.
7096img3777.JPG
There was a distant view of downtown LA.
7096img3781.JPG
Sorta like this.
7096img3780.JPG
Power-tripping central.
7096img3783.JPG
The sunset made the everyone jump for joy.
7096img3784.JPG
I have never seen so much joy. It's like they just won free tickets to a Cher concert.
7096img3787.JPG
It's no Disneyland, the parking lot is dirt.

Stay Gold Premiere

While everyone is still partying into the night, I'm home blogging.
7089img3555.JPG

A few Days in Sardinia - Part 4 (+UK)

This post is basically us leaving Sardinia by ferry, taking an overnight train from Rome to Paris, then taking the Eurostar train under the English Channel to London. All of this in Skeletal form...
7067img3360.JPG
The ferry cabin had a sort of mirrored ceiling. Last time I had a mirrored ceiling was back in 1988 or so, in Lomita, California at some crappy hotel near Jeremy Klein's house.
7067img3361.JPG
More like a fun-house mirror.
7067img3365.JPG
We got up so early that we had to resist falling back asleep. Sleep on a ferry over the Mediterranean? No way.
7067img3366.JPG
Our last view of Sardegna...
7067img3373.JPG
The Rome train station, Roma Termini.
7067img3374.JPG
Of course the motherfucking train to Paris was late, starting a chain of fucked up events. I found a tub of soya gelato to drown my sorrows in.
7067img3377.JPG
We had to wait over an hour on top of the two hours we were already there for our train to arrive. Every 5 minutes a new homeless person would come by the phones behind us and check every single coin return slot like an OCD. Nothing is ever there because nobody uses the phones. So I stocked each coin slot with some spare change and waited for the next person to come by. I was hoping for the really crazy lady who came by every 10 minutes, I liked her. But it was some other guy. He was so amped. He saw me looking at him get my money from the phones and came over to show it all to me. "All this from these phones!" He gestured. I made an amazed face and gave him a thumbs up. He walked right over the the store and bought a drink and a snack.
7067img3378.JPG
These things, Organic Chili Soft Balls, are sorta gross, and give you smelly farts.
7067img3383.JPG
Finally we got settled into our overnight compartment.
7067img3390.JPG
Come to my Museum Talk tomorrow...
7067img3402.JPG
Another mirrored roof? The Italians like to watch themselves.
7067img3417.JPG
Fast forward to London. An Alex Katz installation from the 60's. Best thing I've seen from this artist. At the National Portrait gallery on Trafalgar Square.
7067img3418.JPG
London. Every phone booth is stocked with sweet full color advertisments.

The film shot on this trip. Guess who was on our plane home? When we stopped in LA, the pilot got on the PA and said we have to wait while US customs comes aboard to take care of some business. Then while all of us were sitting a family was getting off the plane. A young woman getting off looked over at me, her face was unforgettable. Watch a video of the photo session.

A few Days in Sardinia - Part 3

The next day we drove back up Costa Smeralda checking out some different towns.
7064img3268.JPG
Baja Sardinia was not our first stop, but it's the first place I started taking digi-photos. Look at all the people. The water is warm and shallow, and clear as glass.
7064img3263.JPG
The hot Italian mom's were out getting roached.
7064img3274.JPG
We had to stop and take a dip here. Deanna likes the no waves and shallow water part of these beaches.
7064img3275.JPG
Of all the places I had to go to set up an exhibition...
7064img3286.JPG
This place takes it.
7064img3291.JPG
The curves are sensual, and Reubenesque.
7064img3298.JPG
This place was pretty nice.
7064img3302.JPG
They had some cool shark rock work on the paths.
7064img3312.JPG
And this amazing church. The Chiesa San Lorenzo.
7064img3331.JPG
We bought some handmade bracelets for our niece from this little 'soon to be dirty hippie' girl.
7064img3334.JPG
The sun was racing behind the ridge.
7064img3339.JPG
The beauty of this coast at sunset is from a fairy-tale.
7064img3344.JPG
After dinner we had some Gelato de Riso. Cioccolato, fragola e panna.
7064img3347.JPG
Then we splurged with fake White Russians. Kahlua and soymilk over ice.

A few Days in Sardinia - Part 2

After the show opened, and after our trip to the coast with Thomas and Regina, we went up north to Olbia, where from there we would explore the Costa Smeralda.
7059img3193.JPG
Speaking of graffiti, here is some in Olbia.
7059img3194.JPG

7059img3195.JPG
I was pretty shitty at taking digi shots on this portion of the trip...
7059img3199.JPG
Fast forward to the secluded cove we found at the southern end of Caprera Island, which I only found out today has some of the "sexiest" beaches in the world. Our starting point for this was the lovely town of Palau.
7059img3207.JPG
We anchored our rented boat and swam in to have a sit on the beach. Around the corner while we were looking for a place to swim we came across an old nude couple jumping off thier boat in the buff. And the other day I saw some guy driving his boat standing up, buns out, weiner flopping about. Clothing is totally optional here.
7059img3217.JPG
By default, (meaning I can't drive a stick-shift car) I was forced to get a much fancier than I would have preferred rental car. In this case, a convertible Audi. I can't deny that it was fun to drive around.
7059img3220.JPG
Costa Smeralda is crazy pretty.
7059img3223.JPG
I did my own graf on Downtown skate shop in Olbia. Sorry dudes.
7059img3233.JPG
Porto Cervo, rich people's hang-out.
7059img3236.JPG
The city center felt more like Fashion Island here in Newport Beach than a town in Italy.
7059img3240.JPG
Regardless of the wealth and the planned community feel, nothing takes away from the natural beauty of this area.
7059img3251.JPG
We watched one of the luxury yachts try to pull out of it's parking space, and in doing so it ran over a bouy that was tied to a small boat, pulling it under, and the boat with it, sending the poor guy driving the boat to jump ship and swim to the dock.
7059img3252.JPG
Whoops.

After the show opened, and after our trip to the coast with Thomas and Regina, we went up north to Olbia, where from there we would explore the Costa Smeralda.
7058img3165.JPG
Olbia is much nicer than people made it out to be.

Nuoro, Italy: Part 7

The rest of my time in Nuoro, and the start of some time off in and around Olbia, Sardegna.
7050img3102.JPG
The day after the opening we took off again to Cala Gonone on the coast. This time with Thomas from Belgium, and his GF Regina from Spain.
7050img3104.JPG
Here was a poster advertising one of the many beaches you can visit by boat...
7050img3105.JPG
I love Europe.
7050img3107.JPG
The boat stopped inside the cave to drop some people off.
7050img3113.JPG
It was very nice in the cave entrance. I need to come back someday to explore it.
7050img3114.JPG
Enchanting, no?
7050img3130.JPG
Thomas and me finding a way to get some rock jumping in - like Catalina...
7050img3139.JPG
I turned 30 fucking 8.
7050img3141.JPG
Regina sees some people who died with her name...
7050img3142.JPG
In Sardinia, they post up death announcement posters on the street. Best 'Street Art' I have seen in a while.
7050img3147.JPG
Thomas is busy trying to get cancer after dinner.

The show from the stairwell...
