Budapest, Hungary - part 20

Whoa, 20 posts about Budapest so far, I'm reaching the end.

The future is a long way away.
771739163girlsbudapest.jpg
Almost every day we walked by a school having recess and I would shoot random bundled up kids.

This face bothered me every time I walked by it. It looks like some skater, but I can't put it together.
76613913coveredstatuebud.jpg
As we walked we came across a statue covered in plastic. I assume the city did this to save the statue from the wear and tear of a harsh winter? Perhaps a Budapester can enlighten me...

Budapest, Hungary - part 16

Deep into my paltry haul of B&W images from this Eastern gem of a city.

Still in Vienna, I lurk on a gentleman drinking a beer.

76583912busatnightbudape.jpg
Back in Budapest night had clearly fallen.
76583912busnightdarkbuda.jpg
The only light was from inside busses where the denizens were captive to my shooting.
76583912girlindarkbudape.jpg
It was nearly too dark to shoot, even the fairest of street walkers were cloaked in the pervasive lack of color.

Budapest, Hungary - part 15

A little Budapest, then a day trip to Vienna, only 2.5 hours away.
76473910mnwalkingbudapes.jpg
Every day we walked the short jaunt from our hotel to the museum. And most days I would shoot the people I walked by. Sadly, with such a big coat on, I was a bit encumbered, and mostly missed my framing. Oh well.
76473903handcuffedmannek.jpg
Handcuffed Mannekins. Stupid, but here you go.
76473910budapestsubwayst.jpg
Budapest has one of the oldest subways in the world. Don't believe me?
76473911kevinlooksathock.jpg
Then we went to Vienna, Austria, only a two and a half  hour car ride away. We went to see art. Kevin enjoys a David Hockney.
76473911kevinlooksatnake.jpg
Kevin also lingered over some hyper-realistic sculpture.
76473911nakedwomanstatue.jpg
It was all pretty believable until you got to the crotch. No vulva, and sloppily glued on fur?
76473911kidsinalbertinam.jpg
Some kids were bored out of their mind in the Albertina Museum.

A night of cruising around, lurking in the dark.

Walking the Chain Bridge over the Danube cloaked in the darkness of night.
7635399thomaslooksinbuda.jpg
Thomas looks in to see what is to be seen. In this case, nothing.
7635399trambudapest.jpg
The tram coming from under the street and running along the river had a certain charm to it that I could not resist.

And extra shot Deanna took of Zsolt and me mildly shralping a bowl.

Some of the B&W photos I shot in Budapest.

Budapest, Hungary - part 11

A mega-post of the opening...
7614triodt.JPG
The first thing we did was show Hans-Peter the show, because he had very important work to do back in Vienna, a news conference about the Dioxin outbreak in chickens? The people want to know, can it spread into Austria? And Hans-Peter is the guy they ask. (Another reason not to eat animals.)
7614edbehindwords.JPG
These first two photos were by Hans-Peter himself. He was on a train back for Vienna, and my long day was just starting.
7614img6614.JPG
Lets get right to the opening photos. I was "detained" for the entire opening, talking and signing stuff, so I didn't get to see how big the crowds were or anything. But luckily Deanna took my digi-cam and shot some scenes during the opening. Here is her work:
7614img6616.JPG
Innen Zines made a zine for the show called Mothball, and I was busy signing them. You can get one if you like direct from Innen. Thanks Aaron! Try this email if the one on the website does not work:

Art consumers filling their heads.
7614img6618.JPG
This woman has just been offended by looking into the peep-hole in the big head, maybe?
7614glb3116.jpg
What's in there you ask? My shit in Timothy Leary's toilet.
7614img6619.JPG
People checking out the Seconds Pass. Yeah, there's a book.
7614img6620.JPG
These girls loved the photos of Greco putting kethup on his burger.
7614img6622.JPG
A couple fondly remembers the time when they were Teenage Smokers.
7614img6623.JPG
The Cul-de-Sac of Lameness was filled with onlookers.
7614img6624.JPG

7614img6625.JPG
I'm glad Deanna did this, I had no idea how many people came.
7614img6626.JPG
Thanks to the people of Budapest for coming!
7614img6627.JPG
Zsolt, the director of the Mucsarnok / Ernst Museum, and a VIP freind.
7614img6628.JPG
Skaters came in force!
7614img6630.JPG
Aaron (left) at the zine table.
7614img6632.JPG
Thomas master curator, Philippe the director of the SMAK museum, and Kevin your Minister of Propaganda discuss "winning the future" and what it means.
7614img6633.JPG
Milling about.
7614img6634.JPG
The last minutes before I had to leave...
7614img6635.JPG
These ladies were interesting. But we had a hard time talking due to the language barrier.
7614img6637.JPG
I then escaped to the outside, this is the view from out there. I was being stalked by a strange man and had to get out.
7614img6651.JPG
Kevin and Philippe at our favorite vegan restaurant in Budapest, Napfenyes Etterem, which translates into Sunshine Restaurant. Look for that on our Food Blog later...
7614img6652.JPG
The nice woman who served us every night.
7614img6661.JPG
After the dinner we were taken to a bar, (smoking still allowed inside in Budapest) and even at 38 years old I'm still getting peer-pressured into drinking beer. Here we have Kevin and Tim both giving me the sign for "You're a pussy."
7614img6657.JPG
And so I drank the nasty Unicum, which tastes like cough syrup.
7614img6658.JPG
And then replaced that crappy taste, with a slightly less crappy taste, beer. Every once in a while I taste these beers just to reconfirm that beer tastes like shit. That is one of many reasons I do not drink. (And still dont')
7614img6663.JPG
But everyone else has a great time drinking beer in a smoke filled room, and more power to them!
7614img6664.JPG
Good times. All of these people have been so kind to me, and so helpful and gracious to help make this show happen. I can never thank them enough.
7614img6666.JPG
Kevin loves it. The next day I flew home sick from some transfer of disease, and spent a few days in bed recovering.
7614img6667.JPG
Visionaries, Philippe and Thomas.

Budapest, Hungary - part 10

More from our day of touristic walking.
7612img6545.JPG
There was a mass in progress in a church we ducked into. This church is on the banks of the Danube, and has been flooded many times.
7612img6546.JPG
It was well into January, but the Christmas trees and lights were still up in many of the churches.
7612img6547.JPG
The sights and smells of Christmas are beautiful in these old churches.

7612img6601.JPG
My good friend (Skater, Doctor, and Professor!) Hans-Peter from Vienna, Austria braved the two hour train to Budapest to see the show! This guy is amazing. And the only skater who is also a tenured professor!
