The Southland

The southern parts of California are pretty like the north.
They call these liberty spikes since they look like the tiara that lady liberty wears in New York via France. There is another statue of liberty standing in the middle of the Siene river in Paris, although it's much smaller than the US one. The shape of your hair may be fun to play with and it advertises at least your perception of your own irreverence. The mohawk is named after the native Americans who lived in the Mohawk valley in New England, but has been used by many cultures throughout history. In my childhood of the 1980's a person with a mohawk was certainly a punk rocker. It siglaned something certain. That the person wearing it listens to punk, and is relatively anti-social. Now of course wearing a mohawk means absolutely nothing. It has been stripped of meaning and is benign. If it signals anything, it's that you're a douche.
This symbol brings to mind by design the famous crucifixion of Jesus. And it hovers over society like a billboard, hopefully attracting some customers.
White's Landing, Catalina.
This gives me a funny feeling, just do it. (note the Nirvana on the cast)
Kevin, Josh, Austin, and Grant in the town of Avalon.
Contrary to the signals sent, these are all girls.
After creeping them out by shooting that first photo I spoke with them and they wanted to get some lesbian kissing into my next book...
Although I added the Hitler tattoo, it's not that uncommon to be around somebody in HB with an uncomfortable racist tattoo out in public without a care. This photo serves as an illustration.

Another day in Paradise

We sometimes forget that where we live is amazing.
Driving through the LBC near Cherry Park on Ocean Ave a young man's burden is a slab of foam coated in resin designed to ride the relentless waves that batter the shore grinding everything into a fine powder. We need underwater propellers or fans that can turn this wave energy into electricity, scientists, get on that already. Oh you have? Good.
The butchering of one of earth's most long lasting and well evolved creatures, the shark. Particularly a Thresher shark yanked from under the pier, hoisted up with rope, and left to die for an hour before being chopped up into bits and sold. The stigma of this animals' family makes this great entertainment, and we are all fascinated with these prehistoric hunters. One of the most infamous family members was caught right on the pier recently. Maybe I'll have to punch one in the nose on my next swim.
An older lady with a skateboard? I made Deanna drive around the block to get this photo. And there she was still in all her glory. Is she waiting for the bus or just resting from her aggressive sidewalk surfing sesh?
Huntington Beach as seen from a car zooming around the corner onto PCH...
Looking for a bag of chips to raid.
Look closely.

An Interview...

Kicking around on a piece of ground...

...In my home town. Waiting for someone or something to show me the way.
Violating the private space of a young fawn with my soul stealing device, my tool for collecting images and defiling visages. Scream PERVERT! at me you wily manipulators and perhaps I will shrink into my wretched shell. Time to get in line for corn on the cob I guess.
I have good info from the streets that Bubbleman is always drunk. He does look a bit haggard and the obsession of clockwork Tuesdays making bubbles for young kids to burst within milliseconds of creation rides the razors' edge of insanity. The gold spray painted suit deflects heat and actually keeps him cool? Just a theory.
Creativity abounds, wait strike that. Copying the mildly entertaining ideas of others flourishes in the early 2010's. And now that any random prick can tag his ideas via interwebs it's official, everything has been created, named, copyrighted, and shelved to never be expounded upon again.
Didn't Deanna have a good photo of this wide eyed young chap?
I feel so much safer now I know who your boss is. Does your boss ask you to vote Republican going directly against his teachings?
Lubricating the publicly acceptable sphincter to keep it moist and shiny is a good way to attract the attention you so clearly hate. The painted face is a double edged sword my dear. For every action creates an opportunity. Vision and your identity play a game, an open dance with an immediate audience.

Huntington Beach, CA - Surf City USA

That's what we call ourselves, even have a surfing walk of fame. Should have a skate one too.
Smooth skin and a youthful physique might bring some extra ears to your Ukulele performance, but does anyone need an unsolicited Ukulele performance these days? The HB pier is a parade of humanity and the opportunistic humans who are there to make a buck off that stream of humanity. Most are very nice people and quite talented. A few are highly annoying. Some are homeless.
One quarter of the pier life is people fishing. I always wonder how much is for fun, and how much for sustenance. That makes me sad. The sport fishing bums me out too. But I'm first in line to see what beasts get pulled up from the polluted depths. To interested to avert my eyes.
My reading of this couple based solely on this frozen millisecond of time: He is abusive and an asshole. Look at his aggressive wrist holding. She's a "dancer" er, stripper, and hates herself and only dates losers who are abusive dicks. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and this a very nice married couple out on a walk and I happened to catch them in the middle of a little argument, or maybe they're even playing around. Who knows? Lets not waste our time worrying about other people's potential bad choices. Next image!
With your hand in both bags enjoy your carefree youth while you can. The future can be strange. Although that concept is completely foreign to you at this point and can only be comprehended at a later date. Hence the carefreeness of this age.
Fresh from the runways of Milan? There are terms such as "Thinsperation" and "Proana" (Pro-Anorexia) or "Thighgap" (the gap that skinny girls have between their thighs)  that people tag their photos with on Tumblr or Instagram. I'm intrigued by the way the anonymity of the internet has given a voice and a forum to this pro bulimia/anorexia community who enjoys torturing themselves with photos of skinny girls, and giving praise to girls who achieve a rib-cage showing skeletal look. I only hope these young women can find an escape from this line of thinking before they kill themselves. I mean pro-anorexia? That's like saying I'm pro-diabetes. It's something to combat through prevention, education, and clearing your mind of toxic thoughts, not to embrace. My sympathies go out to true sufferers, not so much to people who claim they are "pro-anorexia."
I guess there are worse ways to make a buck.
Captian When you always have a camera there is no excuses for missing the shot.
I'm a bikini babe, I can do anything I want. Even Bubbleman was defenseless to her power when she asked to make some bubbles using his gear. The world is your oyster pretty girls, what will you do with your powers?

Monotone Anthropological Observations

More looking and enjoying and wondering.
Yes I will go on the ride with you honey - but I'm immediately regretting it. We pay hard earned money to wait in a line and get on a mechanical spinning contraption for kicks, or in this womans' case, sickness. These human traits I love because animals would never do this. Even the idea of an amusement park is so perfectly human, but also sad in some ways that we need to seek them out.
Cell phones and chocolate are used and consumed while your frame rests on the concrete like a sitting duck, or a feeble fawn strayed from the pack and now easy prey for my camera. Now such a boring and average moment is presented here for an audience to consider and think about. Why even think about this millisecond of time past? We can admire the beauty and fashion of the woman, and the failure of the photographer, me, in framing her better, but aside from that there is nearly nothing more to say. Although I have seen entire essays written about single photographs with even less content.
These puffs of smoke are the microscopic particles of burnt paper and chemical foliage that did not stick to the lungs of these teenaged fillies. The particles left behind will be attacked by their immune system in a futile attempt to remove them from blocking the primary job of this particular organ which is bringing life giving oxygen to the the bloodstream. Soda, Ice Cream, Sunglasses Case, Purse, Cell Phone.
When you have almost nothing the concept of walking up to a group people who clearly have much by virtue of their clothes and expensive coffee drinks and asking them to part with some of their money is an idea whose possible social awkwardness does not mean much at that point. I thought of how this woman might be scanning her surroundings and seeing all the possible places and people and objects that may be used to get her through another day. Such a different view of mine with my camera in the exact same environment. The group of people she sees as a potential bleeding heart liberals who will be kind and give her a dollar means something totally different to me. The trash can means nothing to me but could mean a free drink or snack for her. The act of her digging into that can for that snack is what I'm looking at. Capturing that can tell a story. But then printing and displaying that photo brings up a whole different ethical conversation that I don't want to spend time thinking about today.

Retardation of our Language via Fear

The New York City vibrations and the California suburban situation collected in schwarz und weiß fotos.
America sucks why Come? This young tagger asks. Why go anywhere? Stay in your zone and don't learn anything about how the rest of the world lives and works, perhaps you will never realize that all humans are the same. We are witnessing a massive homogenization of the world, and travel now is imperative, the next generation may not be able to tell LA from Moscow.
The massive canker sore that scars lower Manhattan has sprouted mold in the shape of giant metal cranes. Step out of your thoughts and imagine the earth as a petri dish, and humans as mold growing. The ground zero hole, or any city seen from afar will mimic exactly the movement of mold.
The Mr. Softee man see it all.
Traveling, driving, walking, seeing, recording, processing, proofing, filing, scanning, and sharing with a limit of 550 pixels of width, and this may be the only fleeting moment of time that all of this effort comes to fruition, another humans' eye on it via this blog, engaging and thinking about it. Probably less than a second or two will be spent by maybe 100 people looking at this photo and then it's gone down the stream of constant imagery, never to be printed or seen again.
Stepping into this woman's shoes for a minute. She wakes up and is ready to spend her day attempting to spread the world of her Lord to the masses of sinners who come to the beach to show off skin or leer at it. The vast majority walk by her and her message like water around a stone, paying no mind at all, a few pause to mock her or to shoot her photo, (increasing her anxiety of her weight issue.) A few take a brochure, but of those few 95% of them end up in the trash or floating in the ocean, or blowing around in a whirlwind under the pier. It's hard to go out in public and stand up for something you are passionate about. Most people prefer to never take a side on any issue, who has the energy? It's hot out there, and when she signed up for the street ministry that Sunday she had no idea the looks she would be enduring all day long as the sea of people drip past her. But she feels good that maybe she is reaching one of these sinners. Even reaching one would be worth it. She has found something that makes her feel good about her life in Religion, and she sincerely wishes to spread that good news to others. The day will be over soon and the couch and TV are waiting.
These kids walked by her 10 times that day and never took a flyer. At least one of them is already a Christian I know. I bet you wouldn't have thought that.

From HB to NYC in B&W

Some more relatively recent film photographs. Instead of using quotes, I decided to write my own captions in a superfluously ridiculous way.
Little cylindrical parcels filled with dried and chemical dipped leaves to be lit on fire and the smoke from said fire inhaled into the organs designed to extract oxygen from the air and transport it into our blood giving us life, and only for the taste and the addictive qualities of the chemicals, packaged into a small cardboard box and lashed to the nubile thigh of a female human with only a scrap of material whose meager size allows precise coverage of the genetalia. Tattoo.
Miniature dogs in two, along with a pair crucifixes, the symbolic logo of Jesus' ultimate sacrifice nestled among the sweaty valley-cleavage of a duo of fleshy mammary glands whose protective covering is craftily designed to allow wide eyeball access of the conflicting scenery. Flip-flops, purse, shades.
Device known to cause cancer in most of the world but not in the USA because mega corporations whose bottom line is at stake fund contradictory studies to every single study done about said devices and their link to cancer, stuffed as close as possible to this man's brain, assumedly the one part of his body that he would like to avoid causing his cells to go haywire/cancerous in. And a fine array of bandages.
Jonas Wray brother to famed pro skater Jeremy whose miscalculation caused by high blood-alcohol levels while cliff jumping caused him to hit a ledge and scrape down the side of a mountain nearly losing his life and placing him in most likely life-long debt. His wound was still oozing when I shot this. Thankful we all are he is alive.
Amore under the pier, two young humans embrace in the fading orange light cast by the weakening sun. (explained here for the extraction of that glorious color in the monotone film used.) The flesh of his warm hands gripping the protruding illium in a snug grasp.
The architecture attempts in a futile endeavor to achieve the flourishes provided at evolutionary random that a tree has by default, the beauty is so true and direct that anything made with human hands by virtue of our highly evolved brains will fall short of the infinite time used to create the moment of nature that is a tree.
This mans beliefs persuade him to dress a certain way and spend his time attempting to recruit others into his way of thinking.
Huntington Beach in summertime.

Fight or flight?
Here we go... My niece talked me into trying some stand-up paddle boarding (aka "sweeping") in Avalon harbor, one of the most polluted beaches in California.
Rapture (or death squish?) for the Asian girl watching No Age.
I wanna do a crowd surf (or be groped...)
Who is that tiny young lady in the middle of that sea of humanity? Clara of Clara's Cakes!
Randy getting rad.
Young fans is the best way to have band longevity...
That cloud is the dust whipped up by the age-old slam-dancing that the kids still find so fun.
