wow, banhart just got cooler!
i also get alot of music from skate videos.
i first heard mogwai on the outro to the emerica video, even if it did have a beat added to it. i'm assuming ed had something to do with that(the song choice, not the beat).
i think loads of people think skaters listen to hip hop or mid paced average west coast punk, because alot of that kind of music is played on bad mid nineties skate videos. but i reckon the standard of skate video music has been increasing alot recently. just look at the toy machine or blueprint vids! even the girl video to an extent.

I agree, more skaters are opening up to different music in their parts... I still think that a faster paced song, regardless of what kind of music, makes a part more fun to watch though.

i don't think fast paced musc makes a part better. I think short parts make a part better, not the kind that drag on for five minutes. A good example is Austin, more mellow music, parts short and to the point. Basicly parts you'd watch over and over again ten times in a row.

Music is super important to consider for video parts. I love metal but if i ever EVER had a video part metal wouldn't really fit with my style.

What makes ed so cool? Thats what i want to know.

Devendra got into music from skate videos? That rules because I just wrote a column about that and how skate videos led me to the Misfits.

i first got into sonic youth because my favorite skater used one of their songs (waste, off the album experimental jetset....) in his part in the sheep shoes movie "life of leisure". i was 11 or 12 at the time and i'm now 20 and SY is one of my favorite bands still. looking back though, i don't like that album really at all except for maybe 3 songs, i prefer daydream nation and anything before era SY. but me getting into punk culture and music definitely stemmed from watching skate videos.

the most important factor in a good skate section is the skater in question! isn't that obvious?
some parts go on for ages, but are completely amazing because of their variety in spot and trick selection. look at jerry hsu& louie barletta's section on subject to change. a 5 minute+ song (not to mention a complete beast of a song) but all the tricks and spots are so good that it just leaves you wanting more.

the guy with Ed looks like Richard Manual from The Band

ed man, i agree with you. ali boulala is one of my favorite skaters and i love both his sorry parts, but when i saw his subject to change part with the chill music, it just didn't do it for me. haha, you have a double-chin...fatty.
