Netherlands (a bit of Belgium) & Paris

Heerlen is a Dutch town in the Limburg region of Holland where my freind Stijn Huijts and his family live.
Manon, Noah, Sammy, Jesse, Stijn, Deanna and moi. They let us stay in their house for a few days and we are very thankful for the hospitality!
Stijn has an old painting of mine from 1996 in his house, along with a slew of other, much better artwork.
Stijn organized the OsGemeos twins from Brazil to do a mural. It's very nice.
Deanna and I both fanned out on it.
It's behind a church.
There was a cemetery, we had to go.
The leaves had fallen in all of the colorful slpendor they could muster, it was enough to make Deanna revel in the glory of Autumn.
Dinner time with Noah means drawing. I started it off...
Noah was living all over me trying to add details to my drawing, and starting ones of his own.
He's a creative cat.
He is fully into the Toy Machine world of characters.
He came up with a drunk and wasted Sect dreaming of "More Beer" but since English is not his first language, wrote it "More Bear."
His world is so much bigger than mine.
A quilt of posters from Stijns' last job as the director of the museum Het Domein in Sittard, Netherlands. He had shows with me, Thomas Campbell, Barry McGee, Deanna Templeton, Clare Rojas, Mark Gonzales, and many more! They made this for him when he left.
Part of the family, Manon, Sammy and Stijn. They all play music, it is pretty awesome and so un-American. They eat at the table together for breakfast and dinner. Why is this amazing to me?
I asked Sammy if he had any "face-melting" guitar-solos for me, - he did not. I'm not sure he understood me.
Sammy took me to his local skate shop the day after we shredded his local skatepark. The Locals at Holy Wood skate shop, Heerlen, Netherlands. I don't know how enthusiastic skaters this young can get over an aging pro skater past his hey-day, but it was fun to say hello and watch them shred the local spots.
The shop wall was de-virginized.
Part of the Dutch holiday folklore involves "Black Pete." I don't know how this would go over in the US. Manon told me that it doesn't even go over so well these days in Holland.
We left Heerlen via train and had to switch trains in Liege, Belgium. Look at their damn train station!
And our destination? Paris. From my hotel window. I had to go to Paris Photo to do a booksigning at Schaden books.
Coming home very soon! Check out our food blog?
Posted November 22nd, 2009 by Back in Paris, it feels like home, the sun is out.
the sun is out...the sky is blue,it's beautiful, and so are you. yeah,I had to finish that. Siouxsie and her Banshees did a better job at it.
New Camera,or settings? the photos are wider.
Ed,your head looks tiny in the first photo.
From Brazil to Europe,damn.
I wonder what the Divorce rate in Europe is.
"aging pro skater". Still better than Josiah Gatelyn. that dudes kinda lame.
Black Pete will be loved in the South and Middle America.
Daewon Song totally skated that station's roof.
Last photo,sooo European.

I've seen shit like Black Pete in the south.
Living all over me = face-melting solos

Ed-will you be at Art Basel this year?

Awesome post today...

I know this is pretty off topic but... I'm pissed off today to hear that my local skate shop (Skate Shack) is going out of business closing their last shop after 25 years thanks to those corporate whore bags Zumiez! I remember you putting up a post of a demo Toy did years ago there... I hate Zumiez... I think Josh Harmony was sponsored by them too... or it may be Jerric's. Not sure... Anyways, everyone please boycott that slut mall shop, Zumiez. Thank you.

p.s. Ed, that Zumiez demo in Aurora was still pretty sick, regardless of it being Zumiez-related.

Dear The Odd-On Looker,

Josh Harmony was sponsored by RQ skateshop out of the Chicago area, not Zumiez.

This shop closing and the mall-shops are the nature of the beast that is the skateboard industry these days. Companies rely heavily on big accounts like Zumiez for a big part of their business. We all want skater owned local stores to stay in business, but the only way to do that is to make sure you and everyone you know supports the local shop. If they don't have what you want, ask them to order it, and buy it from them. If they won't order it, people will just go to the mall and get it.

Enjoi: When board companies become clothing brands.
Berra's wack ass united shop thing's totally gonna save everyone.
I'm guessing shoe brands love Zumiez, since everyone has feet and needs shoes. Shit, even Nike SB of all companies has that ad campaign that encourages people to support their local shop.

My local shop is Liberty Boardshop.
It fuckin' rips. There is only one, located in Brea, CA (of all places).

They are truly dedicated to skateboarding, & skateboarding alone.
You go in there to find a bunch of sweaty dudes that just got done playing a game of SKATE out front. No gimmicks. No titties bouncin' around other than the MILFs that bring their kids in for product. Their all about skate, music, & art. Colt Bowden (rode for Toy) painted a HUGE mural in both of their fitting rooms, & if you walk into the shop, every time they have a good music playing.

They have the best product. It's been in Skateboarder mag.
But I noticed they lagged Toy decks, which really bummed me out.
Ed, hook 'em up with a full display of new shit.

Super irrelevant.
Sorry for that news Odd-On Looker.

Great travel post Ed.
Really enjoyed it.
Keep shopping local shops y'all!
I'll be posting some pics of the NYC Os Gemeos mural soon on ye olde McManus blog in the near future.

the little guys can suck just as bad.

for instance, "local" shops owned by a couple of rich brothers who don't skate but wear Nikes, where the shop looks like a LA boutique rip-off, and the majority of focus is on fashion because "skurban" is in these days.

"the nature of the beast," indeed.

Liberty's gay.
Active's bankrupt.
I don't even know where a Zumiez is.

Come to Jokers kooks, we have over 300 boards on the wall.

I don't like facades.
Posted By: Jacob on November 24th, 2009 at 11:30AM PST
Isn't Jokers ran by washed-up pool skaters?

Yo Devin, I need some ketchup for these harsh browns you're serving me..
Posted By: Jacob on November 24th, 2009 at 11:33AM PST
Yeah, that was pretty harsh. Maybe Jokers is full of Jokers. Plus I wouldn't want to go in and get blogged for not wearing the right clothes or something dumb like that
Posted By: Jgonzalez on November 24th, 2009 at 01:25PM PST
They'll blog you for being a "kook" when in fact you have no fucking idea what a "kook" is. Basically, for HB & Costa Mesa kids, everyone besides them are kooks.

I had a friend that would go to Orange County for the summer, he said that there's a ton of Douche bags there. A lot of people say that people in California are really bitchy and whiny.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on November 25th, 2009 at 10:09AM PST
i googled:

"Kook or KOOK may refer to:
A Yiddish surname meaning 'look'"
Posted By: vinny on November 25th, 2009 at 04:38PM PST just added a skateboarding category to their directory and you can add your site for free. They love small businesses. Go to and pick your state, then scroll down to skateboarding and add the info for your site... just be sure to click on the reciprocal link for free button unless you want a 49.00 membership. A little help for the little guys.
