Ruby Aldridge for NY Times Style Mag

This year I did my first official fashion shoot with model Ruby Aldridge, along with friends Grant Hatfield and Ashley Baluyut. It was called "Shimmer like your Sister Kate." Twas styled by Sara Moonves. The editorial can be seen on, and here are some out takes from the shoot (scanned from the proof sheet.)
All the fashion type things I had done in the past were done using friends. This was the first time I have worked with a professional model. Ruby's father is 1960's artist Alan Aldridge and her Mother is Laura Lyons Playboy Playmate 1976. Ruby's older sister Lily Aldridge is also a Victoria's Secret model. She is the half sister of British fashion photographer Miles Aldridge, and the half sister of British model Saffron Aldridge. No pressure.
This dress, it turns out, was ridiculously expensive. Only rich young heiresses could afford one.
None of the photos from the 'Breast Augmentation' bus stop around the corner from my house made it in.
Grant and Ashley were sports with the modeling. And Deanna Templeton was my beautiful photo assistant. Grant is an accomplished photographer, and Ashley is a celebrated fashion blogger.
In between photos the California sun was free-based by the models' skin.
I love these photos of Ashley taken at the very end of the shoot looking off the HB pier.
The light was very nice. These scans from the proof sheet don't do it justice.
"Beauty is the first present nature gives to women and the first it takes away." -Fay Weldon
"Beware of the person who can't be bothered by details." -William Feather
"Beauty is only temporary, but your mind lasts you a lifetime." -Alicia Machado
I had this idea where Grant would be looking at an old 1960's Playboy and the girls would be giving him dirty looks. Had I known Ruby's mother was a Playboy bunny in the 70's I would have tracked down that issue.
"Uh, stupid!"
"O human beauty, what a dream art thou, that we should cast our life and hopes away on thee!" -Barry Cornwall
"He (Marilyn Manson) has a woman's name and wears makeup. How original." -Alice Cooper
"I'd have to say that, in general, models take themselves too seriously. Basically, they are genetic freaks who spend a couple of hours in hair and makeup." -Rebecca Romijn
"Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image." -Goethe
I put them up to this, it's all my fault.
Grant and Ashley may have been bored by the end of the day.
Deanna tried to shield the nudity from the stares of lecherous men. But this guy got a sweet eyeful of boobie anyway.
Sadly this photo did not make the cut.
"Seduction is always more singular and sublime than sex and it commands the higher price." -Jean Baudrillard
This one did make it in.
This was my fave from the bike shots.
The surfers were walking by on accident, I was lucky to only get one shot with them in the background.
I made Grant and Ashley kiss a lot for this one.
Oh hey.
Try keeping a straight face as these filthy sharp beaked fuckers are pecking at your fingers.
Come hither to the unheated "hot-tub" that is freezing our feet.
The in-between stuff was the funnest.
"It is your work in life that is the ultimate seduction." -Pablo Picasso

The photo of her reflection in the car window is amazing! You did well Ed.
Posted By: Robert on March 10th, 2012 at 05:01PM PST
Has there been a lot of postproduction with the photos?
If so, did you do that or the peeps at NY times?
And did you use your Leica?
Posted By: S on March 10th, 2012 at 05:02PM PST
S, No post production really. I adjusted the brightness/contrast and levels on them since they were scanned from the proof sheet. And I cleaned off some dust that was on the images. I do it all myself. The ones in the magazine were drum scans, and the NYTimes staff must have made some minor adjustments. But no major photoshopping at all.

That´s what I meant/realized.
In fashion photography it often lloks like they prefer a lowered saturation.
Wich makes them sometimes look like more sophisticated.
Posted By: S on March 10th, 2012 at 05:47PM PST
Oh and you can tell that they really just did some minor adjustments
by not retouching the red shirted guy out of that seagull picture;)
Posted By: S on March 10th, 2012 at 06:00PM PST
Btw, If I´d send you some underwear and photos of me wearing them
would you send me a deck?

I just read some of the requests people post on your FB page.
Posted By: S on March 10th, 2012 at 07:09PM PST
ok. i'm here.
wow. NY times eh. do they flow you with a subscription now?

Damn. your credentials or whetever are piling high. You won that search for art contest, wasn't that a global contest too? well now you won the world champion skateboard contest and then the world search for new artist thing too. so you're a world champion twice. I'm totally stroking the 4skin of your ego. jk.
totally kissing your butt. but seriously. those are some accomplishments.

These are scanned off your proof sheets? wow. must be huge

LE needs to hire Alan Aldridge for some board graphics

there was a time in my life where that Luara Lyons link would have been somewhat shocking. now I see tits all the time on the internet. well, it makes sense how liberal and european the internet is. exposing kids to information, terrible shit.

super model
Supreme model
ludicrous model

how big are these proof sheets anyway? and kind of film, film size.

a friend of mine brought me back a dining guide for LA. so much plastic surgery.

that balloon photo would get so many likes on instagram

where did that hot ride come from anyway. or does shit like that just show up for fashion shoots.

that dress looks like somebody rolled double sided tape on her and she rolled around on top of crushed Happy Meal toys. yeah. some dipshit that doesn't know shit about legit fashion is talking shit. suggit

lol ed is gonna be like "man. I don't even know that guy" to get more shoots. jk.

uh ohhhh. you incorporated skateboarding into fashion. like all those other Nightlurkers. but is it ok since you're a legit skater, and he is too? que paso.

oh yeah. I read that Juxtapoz article. ed hates irony. hmmm. I have a CAT trucker hat.

haha ok the comments are funny...

Alright I think your getting better at photography Ed! Your full of life!

Woah there is just so many photos in here, I want to comment on everyone.

My most favorite/original was the one with Grant holding the Playboy, and the chicks are all grossed out. Funny Shit!

Man I'm tired.ZZZZzzzzz

The photo with the surfers is cool. I like that one.

Second photo is cool too. she reminds me of Wendy from the shining.

that car looks like a hot wheel

Did you take this photo? Josiah?
it's pretty gnar.

the photo with the Gull and food in hand is the best though. Eswic tee? I would buy. most likely.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on March 10th, 2012 at 11:40PM PST
Yea I took that photo..SSSHHHHH don't tell anyone, I could lose my job. For some reason they took that cow off the line, I think maybe it died when it got to the beef plant. So USDA just threw it outside to bleed out.

I have tons of pics I intend to post. I just wanna do it in moderation.

I've been wanting to read that Juxtapox article? Is it online yet?
Posted By: Josiah on March 11th, 2012 at 04:34PM PST
Part of it.
Not sure if its ever gonna be online.
Posted By: ed on March 11th, 2012 at 05:43PM PST
A friend of mine with a digital subscription sent me screen shots of the article. Ghetto.

Posted By: Josiah on March 12th, 2012 at 10:30AM PST
Great set. I like seeing the shots around the shots.
You should do a series of Grant sleeping at odd areas around the HB. Or maybe sleeping next to various homeless on your travels. Joke.

Remember this?

For some reason I was thinking of you this morning, and lo and behold, you commented.

I get sidetracked with what I originally want to post because I read all the comments first. So now, I've seen that dead, poop covered cow. the life extension promo, and that hilarious snugbuds earphone thing. Is that really for real? Its funny as hell.

but anyway, for an actual comment. These photos are awesome. Who knew Ed was a talented photographer in addition to being a talented ass photographer? The things the Aldridge family has their hands domination 2015 by the Aldridges.

JGonz- I LOL'ed when you said Alan Aldridge should do board graphics for Life Extension.
Posted By: Mike on March 12th, 2012 at 08:13PM PST
I wonder if Nick the Trapasso reads our comments about LE. He\'s probably too stoked on it to give a fuck about what we say anyway
Posted By: Mike on March 12th, 2012 at 08:17PM PST
Extend it.
so. are we fans of LE?

How is Ed gonna top this blog post?
Posted By: Jgonzalez on March 13th, 2012 at 10:41AM PST
No proper Loyal Pawn of the bloodsucking corporate overlord can be a fan of LE.
Posted By: ed on March 13th, 2012 at 11:09AM PST
Yea Fuck LE!
Posted By: Josiah on March 13th, 2012 at 11:18AM PST

LE is Life Extension, its Nick Trappasso's new company.

I wonder if Toy has sold more socks since the sock team was invented???
Posted By: Josiah on March 13th, 2012 at 10:35PM PST
We need to make it our mission to destroy Stance.
Jk. Yep. Probably. I'm sure somebody was like "those socks look cool. I saw them on Facebook"

Did Johnny Bravo ever get laid?
