Barcelona for the NY Times 4

Earlier this year I went to Barcelona with the New York Times Style Magazine, "T," to shoot photos for a travel story revolving around the fact that Barcelona has historically been a hub of Skateboard, Art, and Graffiti culture. Sadly, the article (and hence my photos) will never run because of staffing changes at the magazine. So I will do a series of posts sharing the photos I took on that trip to Spain this April, 2012.

From a distance an interesting architectural sun shade for a plaza, from directly under it a face lit from behind by the sun. Barcelona is filled with delightful human constructions, and may are great for skateboarding.

Barcelona is great for walking around and discovering it's charms.

I hooked up with Alex Castañeda and Javier Sarmiento and some of their friends who agreed to take me around to some skate spots and let me shoot photos of them skating. This is the insanely good Javier on via Laietana.

They changed the Big 4 stairs at the back of the famous MACBA skate spot, but neglected to make it un-skatable, in fact they made it easier to skate, changing it to a nice 3 stair gap. And of course there were kids there skating. This kid is trying a varial heelflip.

Ah. That sucks your article didn't run. but hey, free trip? and you got to work with the new york times.

It seems as though Barcelona has a lot of artistic architecture and whatever going on.

Europeans that can skate obstacles a couple of years old to a couple thousand. Chris Cole tre flip down the Colosseum staircase. Seems as though Cole has kinda stepped out the spotlight for a second.

Super steezy Euro varial heel with the slim shoes and rolled pants. Dylan imported the style. So, you guys hear about gravis and analog firing all of their skateboarders. Burton is trying to be more core. jk.

Modern triumph arc.

That's pretty cool that kids just skate MACBA.

I hung out with Jacob pretty much all day. I'm sending the pics right now. Jacob is cool.

Great pictures! Your point of view is always welcome in skate world. This is my city and, as cities are, it's muting all the time, so don't stop coming back to Barcelona.
Salut!

Spain always spawned good skateboarders.I remember my first trip to barcelona when I was about 12 or 13 years old and was totally shocked that almost every kid skating there was so much better then the guys I saw in Germany that time.Must be the climate and the genes.
Like germans can´t dance.Only march.

the picture of the skateboarding girl is really cool. I can see she`s got good style and everything.

the shot of the kid skating the three block is also very stylish. You timed it just right.

It is good for varied footage when european skaters can skate both modern and historic buildings and monuments, but imagine the damage skateboards could do to the colosseum or any other old historic structure if they started skating and grinding them? I believe most skaters will use their common sense when deciding what spots to skate and which one to let be.

Is that your local skatepark? Eureka Skatepark park?
Where were the tricks?Jk.
Nice blowjob tune.

I couldn't visualize the first photo for a while. It looked like a paper with holes for a face, and then ribbon coming out. I understand what it actually is...it's just crazy haha. I need to see it in a different view. The black things support the structure? It's awesome, it looks like it wouldn't work, but it does. I sound like a dumb person. Oh well.

JGonz and Jacob meet. Finally. I just saw the pictures today on instagram. Makes me stoked for life. I like the video, even the "blow job" music hahaha. Where is Jacob off to next?

and Vinny, if you read this, whats your instagram?
Posted By: Mike on October 25th, 2012 at 02:13PM PST
It's actually the skatepark the town over Jacob was staying in.

Yep, it was the music that comes with the iPhone video editing software.

I don't know where Jacob is going next. His goal is to head back home. He said he was just going to hopefully go with the people I left him with.

Hi fresh, always good to see you here on the comment board.

Looks like Jacob is having a super camping trip from the instagram photos. California looks great to camp in, good weather and not to cold I guess. Everything is always cold and constantly wet when you camp in Norway. But lots of people camp anyways, I think I'm to lazy most of the time.

Hugo: you are lucky to live in Barcelona! it looks so incredibly beautiful. I've never been, but really want to go there. Just the arcitechture alone, it looks stunning. So many sights there.

I found out that Toy Machine has some flow guys in Norway. I did not know that. Does Toy have an european team of flow guys? I guess I don't completely understand the structure of all the sponsoring.

I haven´t heard of an Euro Toy Team so far.
But some guys I know here in CGN got hooked up by 247 Dist.
One of them rides Toy and the other Foundation now.
Totally deserved.

Isn´t Abbe Nyberg from Norway? He´s superb.
Alis Skateboards?Do they still exist? I liked their "Who cares" video.

Oh and yeah, the jgonz/jacob connection is rad!

As far as I know, Distributors or reps or whatever in different countries can flow people stuff. if somebody is good enough they can be imported or exported to the US team. or an international team can be formed. I think Diego is like in charge of some foreign SB team? maybe. I was watching this video a long time ago about these UK skaters and the history of some spots and there were these kids that were Lakai flow and shit and they were talking to UK distributors about getting their shoes and shit.
There's also that Japanese site for Toy Machine out there somewhere too.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on October 26th, 2012 at 12:09PM PST
Whoa Japanese Toy machine? sounds like it would be cool. Imagine a Chinese Sect eye? lol

Dude that skate park looks so fun! Cool Video Jgonz! I'm so stoked that you guys met.

Jacob looks like he's living a very spontaneous life. It's awesome.

Chick skaters rule so hard right now. I think the Elissa Epictly Laterd was an awakening for everyone. Elissa rules. Skater chicks are hot too! Emilie is hot.lol

Chinese sect eye

HAHAHAHA
That is funny. Never thought of that.

2012 everybody on skateboards. NOW
I was thinking about how homo erotic skateboarding is. First, it's nothing but young boys wanting to be like older pro skaters. Then tours are nothing but guys. Magazines have nothing but ads of men skating an interviews with dudes. Skate videos are all dudes and skaters extract fashion from looking at other guys. What girl digs the core skater look? Like a 5 panel hat or beanie. Pocket tee and dickies and some vans or whatever the fuck looks like vans. It's taboo to bring your GF to the spot or skatepark without prior consent from all dudes. Nothing but hot sweaty guys on missions to perform stunts on obstacles. I'm sure somebody could write a paper with a thesis being "skateboarding is really fucking gay"
Posted By: Jgonzalez on October 27th, 2012 at 12:22AM PST
That´s just what I always said:
Skateboarding is making our kids gay.Go Romney!
Posted By: S on October 27th, 2012 at 02:07AM PST
thanks for the sponsor clear up Jgonzalez.

I think Alis still lives, there is a store in Oslo that I think is still up.
Posted By: emilie on October 27th, 2012 at 06:28AM PST
Dude!!! When skaters bring their girlfriends to the skate park is kinda weird. My girlfriend gets super bored, so we stopped doing that years ago. It's even worse when dudes get their girlfriend to film, and she sits in the middle of the park.
Posted By: Josiah on October 27th, 2012 at 10:29AM PST
Is it taboo for a skater girl to bring her non-skater boyfriend to the skatepark?
Posted By: Tenant on October 27th, 2012 at 11:41AM PST
And mike, I know exactly what you mean about that first picture. I too thought it was a paper face with ribbon coming out. Still makes no sense to me
