Barcelona for the NY Times 5

Earlier this year I went to Barcelona with the New York Times Style Magazine, "T," to shoot photos for a travel story revolving around the fact that Barcelona has historically been a hub of Skateboard, Art, and Graffiti culture. Sadly, the article (and hence my photos) will never run because of staffing changes at the magazine. So I will do a series of posts sharing the photos I took on that trip to Spain this April, 2012.

Today's selection will be my favorites from the shoot. (Of course the ones they ended up choosing were NOT these ones for the most part.)

Barcelona over Easter is always great because of the extensive processions that parade through the city towards the main Cathedral.

I shot loads of photos of this kid both hiding from his friends and watching the graffiti artist Oreck paint. The light was getting dim, and I was bummed that I couldn't get a better depth of field.

the skate photos are great, but the very first one is my favourite. At first I thought she looked sad, but now I think she looks happy or content. Like she is in a good place.

It just started to snow here. I took my puppy out to run in it and he freaked, he was so happy and ate alot of it. It was his first experience with snow.

so youve been shooting a lot of color lately, nice : )
but now that i think about it you probably did it for the NY times job

how long would you reckon i'd have to stay in barcelona in order to entirely appreciate its pop culture and historical sites, ed?

i might make it my next travel destination for this coming year since my barrio friend married a barcy girl and he's living it over there
he always invites me to come on over and im actually considering this opportunity

Fresh,

Go for at least a week!

There are so many famous skatespots to look at and skate, and so many cathedrals, monuments, beaches, architecture, people, food, people-watching. A week or more will be great!

The flight will be the most expensive thing if you have a place to stay.

Very nice set of photos.
The mix of b/w and color makes this post so enjoyable.
My fav is the second to last "Man at La Boqueria".
Also enjoy to see you shooting some skatephotos.

How´s life everyone?

I like these photos. Let me guess though, NY Times definitely picked the last photo.

Is stepping over people's graves a taboo? I guess you can't avoid it in a church, but in a graveyard if someone's tombstone is flat, if you walk on it, is that disrespectful? I went up to Sleepy Hollow and visited their cemetery and people wouldn't walk on the tombstones. That's where the two pictures of the Jesus statue are from on my instagram.

Thanks S. It's pretty windy here, power isn't out yet, which is good. Just staying in waiting for it to blow over.

good luck in the storm guys. Hopefully you will all be able to stay online and keep commenting! The news here in Norway is dominated by Sandy. We get alot of american news in general. The election is widely covered over here, makes you kind of wonder if there aint more news from other regions of the world they should cover...

Watching arrested development AGAIN, what a show!

Do you want to expand toy machine with an european team Ed?

Ten years from now, we should all book rooms in the same hotel in Ibiza and have a frequent commenters rave on the beach. Can´t wait.

i just realized i relied on facebook to know what's going on in the world now that i closed my account
if it wasn't because of you guys or my roommate i would have no idea of hurricane sandy.
but the elections, i am constantly bombarded on that

what do you know emile, after a long time of insisting my friend finally got me into arrested development
im definitely hooked, im about to finish the first season.
gob is my favorite bluthe

10 years?? why?
lets rave on asap!
i really dislike futuristic schemes or goals in particular,
especially when its "after college" or "when i retire"
i have yet to understand that whole "one day i will..." mentality.
fuckn get your hands on it and make it happen
life wont wait
unless you have responsibilities, like a son
then you are fucked.

not really... but you get the picture.

I love the DC hate. man.
it's kind of like how Osiris has their brand image of what shoes they make all over the fucking place. from Duffel's signature shoes to fucking plastic sky high shoes and all the bullshit in between and chuck taylor knockoffs.

have I even commented on this post yet? sorry ed
Posted By: Jgonzalez on October 30th, 2012 at 12:13PM PST
I like the photos of random crews of foreign skaters. Skaters still kind of look the same everywhere. I guess that's because they all buy the same products and shit.

I'm sure Daewon would have some shit on that match spot.

I like Messi. I guess i'm a dumbass soccer fan that doesn't know anything, but whatever. he's dope.

ed's heelflip on that spot is so good. I used to watch that shit over and over again on my downloaded pirated copy and shit, I bought a real copy on DVD recently but it was a used copy. Toy Machine didn't generate a new copy for me to buy and to profit from. sorry broz

Graf. LOL @ all the banksy hate going on. Juxtapoz posts his pieces on Instagram and people hate on it now.

Overlord, I take it that you're into nerdy details and stuff. Do you ever read about like the anatomy of churches and stuff?

Fresh, yes. I imagine if you have a place to stay that would be way better than paying the probably unbearable amount of money to stay in a hotel for over a week. Shit. There was an ad here locally on craigslist that some mid 40's guy wanted at travel companion since he was going to vacation in London. He would pay for hotel and flight and crap but he wanted a 20 something year old female to go with and he requires that you sleep in bed with him. He doesn't explicitly say fuck him but if he's paying for your vacation well it's like you kind of should but he says you must sleep in bed with him. Imagine explaining that to your folks, that you're on holiday with some random. Suck his dick and you'll get continental breakfast buffet.

ps that Kate upton photo with all the zoo York gear. I was trippin cause we're the same age. And she is pretty. And zoo York has such ugly gear an has all of that shit at Kohls. Westgate is so dope.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on October 30th, 2012 at 04:02PM PST
I wonder how turned off Kate Upton would be if I striked up a conversation about how dope Westgate is and how Zoo used to be sick and Harold Hunter

That craigslist ad is just odd... "must have a love for cuddling"
I feel like meeting anyone on Craigslist personals would just be awkward and fairly dangerous.
Though I guess it's just about as awkward and dangerous meeting someone on the streets or at the store, or wherever it is people go to hook up with others.

not you?
one link led to another,
i just put my amateur sherlock holmes hat and deducted you were tenant,
but failed.

it went like this
-clicked ed and deanna's food blog above after posting here
-read the comments from the last post
-the last comment by "tanner" looked interesting
-quickly related "tanner" with new commenter "tenant" (you)
-realized it was probably you because it was the same day you posted here
-clicked on link posted there by said tanner
http://theharshbarge.blogspot.com
-"tanner" blogger profile is headed by the harsh barge thing
-the dudes from harsh barge listen like black metal and you commented here something about black metal

all this in 2 minutes
my gawd im a fucking creep.

but yeah, the harsh barge, i really wanna do that, it was just added to my bucket list.
now i need a partner in crime.
fuck it, ill put it on craigslist.
i think jerry hsu, keegan sauder, and joey pepper did something like that feature in a recent skateboarder mag

hows your hallows eve going, y'all?

Internet is crazy. People forget what they broadcast. I've already instagrammed my face. My identity is out there. I've try to not blast my mug all over the place. that's lame.

Halloween was lame. not enough trick o treaters.

I want to go to London this summer. I need to talk to my boss about how long I can get off over the summer. I want to go for a week. I want to go with a friend. another friend said "if you're spending that much, go for two weeks" which would be cool. I need to talk to my boss

still laboring at target?
i recently read somewhere that target runs some high tech forensic CSI shit crime labs, more sophisticated than your local police dept.

now the internets and target's security got your carita, mijo.
but again, who isn't nowadays.

Halloween is always lame, parties and crime.
I went to burnside to see what their anniversary party would be like, and it was absolute chaos. I left after about 20 minutes

Matt Bennet looked to cool in his olympic costume. And Grant, he is trying to get an invite to our Ibiza rave party.

Out Benevolent (what does it mean???!!) overloard AKA Ed looked cute in his costume.

I saw Collin hanging with the baker boys in bake and destroy, I guess he skates with alot of those guys. He is on Emerica like many of them. Great video. I love all the lifestyle stuff they put on the end. Its like allmost half an hour of weird and funny clips after the credits.

Jgonz: college parties can be very cool, but its a rarity in my experience. There´s usually alot of sitting around and smalltalking to whoever happens to sit down next to you. Waiting for something fun to happen, which it usually never really does.

@Tenant nice photos! Do you know or hangout with Trevor Ward?

Bake and Destroy was on youtube for a few days then got taken down. It was pretty sick.

I think Collin was rooming with Jon Dickson at some point. Plus Collin and Figgy are tight bros too!
Posted By: Josiah on November 1st, 2012 at 08:19PM PST
Josiah - Yeah, I've known trevor for quite a while, have been loosely acquainted for probably like 6 years or so.
I don't see him all too often, though I've been running into him a bit lately.

And yeah bake and destroy was awesome, I randomly searched YouTube for it and found it and then saw it again at a friends house, apparently the issue of thrasher with the DVD is out now, or being sold by some shops.
I'm not all too sure as its hard to keep up on everything

Also, thanks for the compliments, that night was nuts. Right after I ran out of film a bum tried stabbing some guys and they beat him up pretty bad. Scared the shit out of me, the guy was pretty bloody
